Matthew Shepard bought this ring in the hopes of giving it to his future husband. It recently became part of our collection, along with a Superman cape he wore as a child, a ribbon he won at the Central Wyoming Fair, and a kind note his third grade teacher wrote him when he was bullied at school. Shepard was brutally murdered in 1998 in Laramie, Wyoming. His killing made headlines around the world and resulted in an outpouring of grief and anger that people channeled into poetry, songs, movies, a charity foundation, a national Hate Crimes Prevention Act, and at least two plays.
Today, his parents entrusted us with materials related to his life, including a huge number of condolence letters.
