This small dress belonged to Margarita Lora, one of the children brought to the United States from Cuba on August 14, 1961, as part of Operation Pedro Pan. Lora was only eight years old when she made her international journey. ?
Between 1960 and 1962, over 14,000 children traveled from Cuba to the United States during an exodus that is now known as Operation Pedro Pan. After the Cuban revolution, some Cuban parents feared for their children's futures under communism. Many of these parents entrusted the Catholic Church, aid societies, and the U.S. State Department to transport their children out of Cuba and connect their children with relatives and friends in the United States. ✈️ After arriving in the United States, Lora, her sister, and her two brothers went into foster care in Syracuse, New York. Years later, in 1966, Lora and her siblings were re-united with their parents in Washington, D.C. ?? #HispanicHeritageMonth #HispanicHeritage #HHM #AmericanHistory #CubanAmericanHistory #LatinoHeritage #LatinxHistory #YouthHistory #ChildrensHistory #ReligiousHistory #Girlhood #Philanthropy #ManyVoices #NationWeBuildTogether
