Using this microphone, KCOR reached listeners as one of the nation's first full-time, Spanish-language radio stations. ?️ In the 1940s and 1950s, Hispanic entrepreneurs had to fight for space on the U.S. radio dial. During World War II, the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) enforced strict controls over what was allowed to go out on the airwaves. Some Americans feared that non-English radio stations could be used to spread un-patriotic messages.
Undaunted, KCOR founder Raoul A. Cortez used these restrictions to his advantage. He argued that a new, full-time Spanish language station would help the U.S. win support for the war effort among Spanish-language speakers. The FCC issued him a license in 1946. ?
KCOR began broadcasting at 1350 AM on February 15, 1946, but that’s just the beginning of the story. To learn more, click the link in our bio.
