Wine is hard work. This budding box carried Oscar Robledo's tools for grafting new buds onto healthy rootstock at his family's California vineyards. Budding allows growers to plant different varietals (such as Chardonnay, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon) onto mature roots.
Oscar is a member of the Sonoma-based Robledo winegrowing family. His brother Reynaldo migrated north from Michoacán, Mexico, in 1968. Following their father, who worked in the bracero program (a contract labor program that brought Mexican men to work in the U.S.), Reynaldo found work in the vineyards of Napa and Sonoma. By the 1990s, he’d risen through the ranks and established Robledo Family Winery.

Our #SmithsonianFood team continues to collect around the impact of Latinos in American agriculture and food history. Cheers to that and to #HispanicHeritageMonth!

As you enjoy a Friday evening beverage, share some American history with a friend! (Or a bud?) 🍇🍷❤️ #HispanicHeritage #LatinoHeritage #LatinxHistory #WineHistory #CAhistory #CaliforniaHistory #Sonoma #NapaValley
