This image took me back to the neighborhood of Yuhari Mahalla near my family home in Baku, where huge brass vats with tar heated on burning wood often blocked narrow streets. What made the memory even more poignant was the sound of bells jingling on the necks of pigeons that flew over the twelfth century minaret of Ulu Cami mosque. Standing on a rooftop in Mardin, I thought about how intertwined the cultures and traditions of this region are. Dating back to the Mesopotamian civilization, Mardin, an ancient city in southeastern Turkey overlooks a vast plateau that expands to Northern Syria. The city’s geographic position at the crossroads of the east-west trade routes fostered development of a diverse fabric of Arab, Turkish and Kurdish cultures.
