Photo: @andy_mann // The Caribbean Reef Shark is one of the largest and most important apex predators in the reef ecosystem. It is also highly valued for its meat, leather, liver oil and fins and is commonly targeted by long line fisherman. A profitable ecotourism dive industry has arisen around this species, which is estimated to be near 10 million dollars a year in the Bahamas alone. The practice of feeding sharks for tourists has drawn controversy as opponents argue that sharks may associate humans with food while proponents say the feedings contribute to conservation by educating and inspiring people. So far there is little evidence that feedings increase attacks.
