David D. Ho, M.D., has been at the forefront of HIV/AIDS research since the 1980s. Dr. Ho and his team are credited with developing treatments that can reduce HIV in the bloodstream, and due to their efforts, people living with the virus today are able to lead longer lives.
In this #GregoryHeisler photo of Dr. Ho, the doctor examines an enlarged image of an HIV-infected T-cell; the red coloration indicates the virus. The portrait was used on the cover of “TIME” magazine when Dr. Ho was named “Man of the Year” in 1996.
Already a recipient of the Presidential Citizens Medal in 2001, the @smithsoniannpg’s Portrait of a Nation prize is the latest in Dr. Ho’s many accolades. #PortraitGala17
