At 20 years old, Marine Corporal William T. Perkins, Jr. deployed to Vietnam to document the war. "I can't believe how lucky I am to be doing exactly what [I want] to be doing," he wrote home to his family.
In October 1967, Perkins’ company was attacked by enemy fire. A grenade fell through the air and landed a few feet from where he huddled with a group of Marines.
Perkins flung himself on top of it. It exploded.
He absorbed the grenade’s impact with his own body, and died saving the lives of three of his comrades.
Perkins became the only combat photographer ever awarded the Medal of Honor, the nation’s highest military honor.
His mother donated the medal to our @国立アメリカ歴史博物館, where it’s now on display with the camera he was wearing at his death, bearing the scars of the grenade shrapnel. #VeteransDay
