Before and after shots of Gilbert Stuart’s 1796 “Lansdowne” portrait of George Washington, which is back on view at @smithsoniannpg after more than a year of study and conservation.
The team used ultraviolet, infrared and x-ray radiation to find out more than the human eye can observe. Their digital imaging techniques tell us about Stuart’s materials and working processes, as well as set a plan for treatment.
What they learned led to a successful cleaning that revealed the artist’s original intent. The painting had been covered with a varnish that yellowed over time, disguising its original brilliance.
Removing the varnish exposed fresh new details throughout the painting and a portrait reflecting cooler tones.
The analysis also showed artist changes throughout the portrait—like the placement of a column or number of quills in the inkwell—not visible in the finished piece.
See the iconic portrait now in the museum’s newly renovated “America's Presidents” exhibition.
