Dr. Madeleine K. Albright has always been courageous. As a child, she and her family fled Prague twice—first at the outbreak of World War II, and again after the 1948 communist-backed coup.
After settling in the United States, she earned a PhD from Columbia University, before becoming the highest-ranking woman in the history of the U.S. government when she was sworn in as Secretary of State in 1997.
Albright used her collection of brooches as a form of diplomatic communications, as seen in the pin she wears in this portrait by @tgs. She wore the dove-shaped brooch while engaging in Middle East peace negotiations.
We’re @smithsoniannpg, and we’re sharing portraits of our #PortraitGala17 honorees this week. Albright’s reputation as a pioneering public servant and contributions to American history qualify her as a recipient of the Portrait Gallery’s Portrait of a Nation Prize.
