Hoppy International Rabbit Day! Like all jackrabbits, the black-tailed jackrabbit, Lepus californicus, is actually a hare. These close rabbit relatives are generally bigger and hardier, and they don’t burrow. Since they live in open spaces, including desert scrublands and prairies, they need to be speedy to escape predators: the black-tailed jackrabbit can reach up to 35 MPH and is an incredible leaper, covering up to 19 feet in a jump. Jackrabbit babies, called leverets, are also more rugged than rabbit kittens, who are born without fur and can’t see at first. Leverets are born furry and with open eyes, and after 2-3 days of nursing, they fend for themselves.
