The mandarinfish’s marvelous technicolor exterior might serve as a warning signal to predators: don’t eat me! That’s not the only way these fish may try to avoid becoming a meal: they also secrete foul-smelling mucus with a bitter taste and toxins. Advertising that you’re unappetizing via intense coloring or unpleasant odor--known as aposematic signaling--is found in many species. But it’s just one of the explanations proposed for the mandarinfish’s vibrant look.
Native to the Pacific, these reef-dwelling fish are bottom-feeders and often use coral branches for coverage. They eat small crustaceans and other invertebrates, and grow to be about 6 cm in length.
