This carnivorous sea slug belongs to a group known as nudibranchs, named for the feathery “naked gills” on their backs. There are more than 2,000 species found in oceans across the globe, most in tropical waters, with stunning variations in size, shape, and coloration. They’re hermaphrodites, with both male and female sex organs, but they don’t self-fertilize--to mate, a nudibranch aligns its reproductive pores with another. Though shell-less, these soft-bodied mollusks possess remarkable defense mechanisms. Some can ingest the chemical defenses of their prey and absorb those chemicals into their own tissues for protection.
