Photograph by George Steinmetz @geosteinmetz #onassignment for @ナショナルジオグラフィック This crew of some 30 women have just walked down 1000 vertical feet from their village to start a day of planting rice on the terraces of Yuanyang, China. These are the world's largest extent of terraced rice paddies, and were designated a World Heritage site by UNESCO to prevent the landscape from being altered. But young people here are increasingly choosing to work in cities, so the company that owns the tourist overlook recently leased most of the terraces and now pays these women to maintain, plant and harvest them. This new system basically subsidizes the production of rice to preserve the epic views. To get an idea of what the fields look like from above, go to @geosteinmetz
