Every Spring, approximately 80 dog teams teams journey one thousand miles across the Alaskan wilderness from the outskirts of Anchorage to Nome in one of the toughest races known to man- The Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race. Founded in 1973, the race has changed in countless ways over the years, but nothing quite as challenging as what we are seeing now due to climate change. This year the race was re-routed once again due to poor trail conditions and lack of snow. As the pattern of abnormally warm weather in Alaska continues and grows, the entire tradition and sport of mushing may be at risk.
