photo by @chamiltonjames / Charlie Hamilton James - meet Figeuro - he’s a Goffin’s cockatoo. Here he is making a tool out of a piece of cardboard. Figeuro expertly cuts the cardboard, using his beak as a pair of scissors; until he has the required length and thickness he needs. The reason - if he can poke the stick through a hole in a small perspex box created by researchers, he can dislodge a nut and eat it as a treat. Figeuro can make tools out of cardboard, twigs and blocks of wood - as long as he can carve it with his beak to the required length he’ll use it. Tool use is fairly rare in the animal kingdom but Figeuro is a bit of a craftsman. Take a look at our @ナショナルジオグラフィック instagram story today to see Figeuro at work - along with a few other birds who like to use their beaks, particularly for biting photographers with! Shot on assignment in Austria for @ナショナルジオグラフィック with @robsrw
