A female leatherback turtle nests under moonlight on the island of St. Croix in the Caribbean Sea. Researchers are uncertain as to exactly how old leatherbacks must be to begin mating, though most estimates say that the turtles must be 20-30 years old. The female crawls ashore typically after dark, digs her nest and lays a clutch of eggs. This picture was made at 2am, with a long exposure under a nearly full moon.
Leatherbacks are the largest, widest-ranging, and deepest diving of all sea turtle species. Their lineage dates back more than 100 million years.
