Located in the vicinity of Tintagel Castle, Merlin’s Cave is an important site for the Arthurian myth and is only accessible during low tide. Tennyson made Merlin's Cave famous in his Idylls of the King where he describes waves bringing the infant Arthur to shore and Merlin carrying him to safety. Merlin is also credited with instilling the virtues that the legendary king is so revered for. The cave is still very atmospheric, and when famous guide Tor Webster - with his staff and torches held up to light the darkness - leads a group of tourists through the cave, one might indeed imagine Merlin approaching.
