A delicate butterfly fish, endemic to the Ogasawara Islands of Japan, gets cleaned by a tiny wrasse above a coral reef. Throughout my nearly 40 years of exploring the sea I have come to find that everything is connected and what effects one species ultimately effects many others. Tiny plankton are connected to giant whales, coral reefs are connected to sharks and jellyfish are connected to sea turtles. Ecosystems in the sea are like a finely tuned watch, where all the gears mesh perfectly. Remove a gear or grind down its teeth and the entire instrument will malfunction. The more we explore, the better we understand how best to protect Earth’s oceans and keep our planet healthy for generations to come.
As a photographer I look for special moments in the sea to photograph and share. Being in this place at that time I was allowed a glimpse into the lives of these animals - Two small fish drifting above a remote reef; a symbiotic relationship that for me is a metaphor for the bigger picture of our planet.
