Bright lights, tiny village. ~
Day to day life for the Kulunge has always been structured through an animistic mythological tradition called the 'mundhum.' A kind of oral history, the mundhum is a series of tales that starts with a creation myth and then chronologically follows key ancestral figures as they interact with various forest deities and other forces of nature. The mundhum narrative, which includes detailed and complex genealogies, ultimately serves as a code of ethics for everyone in Kulunge society - how these mythological characters behaved in various situations, then so should you. ~
But every year the outside world gets a little closer. Inexpensive smart phones and 3G connectivity proliferate, and the youth all know those key places in the village where the connection is good enough to update their Facebook profiles. A road has been cut to within a day’s walk of the Kulunge’s ancestral homeland, and work has begun on a trekking route that will penetrate the upper reaches of the Hongu Valley and connect it to the Khumbu region. There is even talk of the Nepali government constructing a small airport. ~
Today’s youth, like the young man pictured here, represent the first generation of Kulunge to be educated in schools. With literacy and exposure to other cultures, most don’t want to be farmers like their parents. The desire to travel Nepal and the world, to earn wages and engage in consumerism pulls these young men and women away from the Hongu River valley. ~
As the wide world slowly encroaches and the distractions grow, the culture begins to fade – and the deities of the mundhum retreat ever deeper into the forest. ~
