The two yard managers were lucky to survive this section being winched off a scrapped ship in the deadly and toxic shipbreaking yards of Bangladesh. Hundreds of large pieces of steel shrapnel fired off in all directions as the section fell and thundered to the ground. Once pulled to shore, it’s cut into smaller sheets and much of it is recycled into rebar for construction—and almost everything on the ship is resold or reused. Usually more than 150 ships are dismantled each year on the once pristine black sand beaches north of Chittagong. The issue is the dangers to workers and the environment. Many times they are risking their lives with heavy metal exposure, using cutting torches with no eye protection, falling off ships, getting blown up or incinerated from the flammable gases inside the ship or being crushed from the steel plates falling on them. Seven workers were also shot this year protesting the death of another worker who was run over by a truck. This photo is part of a sequence that you can see in the short National Geographic shipbreaking video which has been viewed by over 2.4 million people on several sites. THE SHIPBREAKERS

It's like a bomb going off.
