The Brazilian artist Verena Smit (@verenasmit) has an austere vision. Her work on Instagram restricts its palette to monochrome, collaging fabric and photographs with scraps of paper that often have typewritten words inscribed on them. These words are fragments of poetry. Simply by suggestion an object or idea, they open up whole worlds for the viewer.
Smit’s poems are often melancholic. The word “lover” fades from paper. “Whole in my heart” becomes “hole in my heart.” But for #GucciGram, the artist’s imagination becomes less sad and more enchanted. Actual flowers emerge from an envelope labeled “blooms” against a backdrop of #GGCaleido print. The same word is typed onto a monochromatic splash of flowers, joyful but quietly so.
