Ryder Ripps (@ryder_ripps) is a consummate hybridizer. He works as easily in the programming languages underneath the smooth surfaces of the Internet as he does in the slick conceptualism of contemporary art. He’s a key figure in popularizing and preserving Internet art, and, through projects like dump.fm or his creative agency OKFocus, in recycling that ethos into the present through many avenues. For instance, OverlayerApp, which OKFocus built and which Ripps uses frequently on his Instagram feed, comes with a bunch of different layers ready to be superimposed onto any source material and spun derivatively into a thousand different social streams and feeds.
His first solo exhibition this year at Postmasters Gallery in New York City put several of the model Adrienne Ho’s self-portraits through Photoshop’s liquify filter, twisting her self-presentations into grotesque distortions and then blowing them up from iPhone sized squares to monumentally-scaled oil paintings that recall, in their scale, the self-serious work of midcentury Abstract Expressionist titans. For Ripps, materials are as meaningful as the techniques used to twist, augment, or stylize them. His remix of #GucciGram jokingly offers a crash course on how to identify real Gucci products featuring #GGBlooms and #GGCaleido, versus, say, a plastic bag scribbled crudely with a Sharpie.
