London-based artist Sara Berman’s (@saraberman1) background in fashion now informs her creative focus on painting. Using Instagram to share her work in detail with tens of thousands of followers, @saraberman1’s feed features fashion girls both dolled-up and deconstructed, with clownish lips and distorted eyes appearing alongside covetable blunt cut bangs and patterned blouses. It’s a kind of gothic Impressionism, rendered in rich strokes of oil paint. This dual sense of beauty and abnormality demands the viewer’s attention. But when you finally scroll down through the rest of your Instagram feed, a hint of Berman’s distinct expressiveness hovers like a filter over the images that follow.
Layering her pink-cheeked, doe-eyed ladies over Gucci’s #GGCaleido print and adorning them with an impressionistic take on Gucci’s rose and ivy-colored #GGBlooms, Berman’s portraits are fit for display in either a fine art gallery or a high fashion editorial. And we’re glad they’re at home right here in our palms.
