Photo @Cory Richards On assignment with @intotheokavango for @ナショナルジオグラフィック The water of the upper Cuito is crystal clear and winds its way seemingly aimlessly towards the delta. For the past few days we've encountered large human triggered burns, common practice in much of Africa, and especially Angola. The problem with repeated burning is it robs the landscapes capacity to hold water, instead draining more quickly than is natural and promoting a flood cycle and more erosion. If The water is not held and released slowly, but instead drains unnaturally quickly, the delta downstream can face drought cycles. The more this area is made accessible, the more it is inhabited and the more burning is observed. We don't yet fully understand why the burning is occurring so often and so much in this region, but we hope to find answers today as we visit the first village we've come across. @thephotosociety @natgeocreative @エディー・バウアー #okavango15 posted from the field
