Huey Percy Newton — born February 17th, 1942 in Monroe, Louisiana — was the co-founder and leader of the Black Panther Party. He was the Party’s Minister of Defense. Newton was shy and pragmatic. Fiery rhetoric was not just a means of propaganda for Newton; it was problem solving. Where Eldridge Cleaver said, “You’re either part of the solution or you’re part of the problem,” Newton defined it further by saying, “Sometimes to get rid of the gun, you have to pick the gun up.” Newton taught himself how to read and successfully graduated high school in 1959. He studied law at Merrit College, where he met Bobby Seale. They formed the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense. Newton and Seale believed that a militant stance was the only method of destroying institutionalized racism — much like John Brown a century earlier. They created the Ten-Point Program, which called for better housing, jobs and education for African Americans. It called for an end to economic exploitation of black communities. Newton started “Socialist Survival Programs" to help those in need. The Panthers also fought against police brutality. Members of the group would go to arrests in progress and watch for abuse. Newton was arrested in 1967 for allegedly killing an Oakland police officer during a traffic stop. He was later convicted of voluntary manslaughter and sentenced to two to 15 years in prison. Cleaver — the Party’s Minister of Information — lead the powerful and infamous “Free Huey” campaign. Newton’s name was cleared in 1970, but the F.B.I.’s COINTELPRO (Counterintelligence Program) would fatally wound the Black Panther Party by the late 70s. Newton returned to school, earning a Ph.D. in Social Science from the University of California, Santa Cruz, in 1980. Newton was tragically murdered in 1989. Dr. Huey P. Newton’s legacy lives in the streets and the souls his vision, brilliance and passion touched. His legacy lives in every soup kitchen and homeless shelter. Dr. Newton’s legacy lives in community — every community. Dr. Huey P. Newton is a Radical // (credits in comments)
