Harriet Tubman was a civil-rights activist who dedicated her life to freeing slaves and the abolishment of slavery. She was born in Dorchester County, Maryland in 1820 and had successfully escaped her own slavery by 1849. She went on to become one of the most famous and important “conductors” of the Underground Railroad. She is credited with freeing over 60 people. In 1850, however, the Fugitive Slave Law was passed. The law stated that escaped slaves in the North must be recaptured and returned to slavery. Tubman responded by “rerouting” the Underground Railroad from Philadelphia to Canada, where slavery was prohibited. Tubman went on to work alongside the abolitionist John Brown. Brown was a revolutionary abolitionist who believed that violence was the key to destroy the institution of slavery. Brown was later executed, but Tubman went on to aid the Union in the Civil War. She became the first woman to lead an armed expedition into war when she lead the Combahee River Raid, which liberated more than 700 slaves in South Carolina. When Tubman died in 1913 she was buried with military honors at Fort Hill Cemetery in Auburn, New York.
