“All of my knives are shaped bare-handed. I don’t use gloves so that I can feel the temperature of the steel,” says Adam Balkovic, who makes handcrafted knives under the Biltsharp (@biltsharp) name from his small shop in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. “I very rarely cut myself, but I burn my hands up every single day.” From forging to finishing, the complete fabrication process of a single knife takes Adam upwards of 20 hours. “Every single thing I make is individual and unique,” he says. Recent works reflect Adam’s fascination with art deco and the aesthetics of the 1920s, but it’s the personality of the materials that inspire him most. “A craftsman's favorite part of a project might be the quaint little knot that tends to go unnoticed,” he explains. “The small area of the knife dedicated to the wood accentuates the wood’s best parts.” Photo by @biltsharp
