These objects, one a lump of melted and fused screws and the other of nails, are reputed to be remnants of the Great Baltimore Fire of 1904. The fire raged for two days, beginning on February 7.

Fire companies from as far away as NYC and DC came to help fight the blaze, only to find their hoses were not compatible with Baltimore city hydrants. In the wake of the fire, there was a national push for the standardization of hose couplings and other firefighting equipment.
This week is #FirePreventionWeek. Have you heard of the Peshtigo Fire in Wisconsin? Check out the Peshtigo Fire Museum if you're even in the area! #FPW2014
