Photo: @melissafarlow | A lone surviving starfish hangs on to a rock at low tide on an Oregon beach. Massive numbers of sea stars along the Pacific coast are dying from a mysterious wasting disease. It is so sad to see them melt away in front of your eyes. They form lesions that spread and decay and contort their bodies. Within days they lose their arms, which walk off on their own! The poor critters can’t hang on to anything and die.

It isn’t identified as a virus or bacteria. No one knows exactly why Sea Star Wasting Syndrome is happening, but researchers say warmer water temperatures seem to contribute.
The plague has hit from Alaska to Mexico. The current outbreak started showing up along the Washington coast last year. It is estimated that a devastating, unprecedented 80 percent of starfish are dead.
