Three decades ago, Barry Blanchard moved from his native Calgary to Canmore to follow his dream and work as a climbing guide for Yamnuska Mountain Adventures. In the years that followed he became a climbing legend, with many ascents of the most difficult-to-climb peaks around the world and a knowledge of snow, ice and avalanche safety in the Canadian Rockies that is off the charts. Through it all, Barry has kept his humble nature, his hippie ideals and his ponytail, and asking some manufacturer for a free pair of skis is about as corporate as he gets. In the process of defining success on purely personal terms, he surely has had more amazing life experiences than any billionaire could ever dram of. He is that rare individual in climbing who can climb the most difficult routes, teach people of all age and skill levels how to do it, and then be the center of conversation at the climber's hut at the end of the day. If I have grandchildren, I look forward to telling them about my climbing adventures with Barry Blanchard in Yoho NP in the winter of 2013.
