This acknowledgement of both the limitations of conversion and the imperfections of human nature strikes me now as more sincere than most religious talk I hear today. Artists, often in their personal lives and subject matter, also delve into the activities of sinners. The blues, jazz, splattered paint, gritty photojournalism, these are all the art of pain, struggle, and solace in the work itself. Wet plate collodion, the process used by photographers in the 19th century and in this photo above, is a medium that produces imperfect images. It is messy and difficult, just like life often is. However, it produces a handcrafted and unique result, and for the photographer working in a world where most digital images merit only a half- second scroll by on a mobile device, that can be a big advantage. For when I look at a finished wet plate image, with its swirls of cinnamon and silver chemicals shining back, it speaks to me as a celebration of our imperfect, but beautiful world. Perhaps that is the same voice that Bruce Springsteen was hearing when he sang: "Listen to the junk man, oh, listen to the junk man, he's singing, he's singing."
