Crouching lobster, hidden #Caturday—blink and you might miss the spooky-season-esque cat here! Can you spot it? 👀
If you're familiar with 17th-century Dutch and Flemish still-lifes, you might spot some references here—this painting by Cecily Brown is titled "Lobsters, Oysters, Cherries and Pearls," all luxuries often present in those historical paintings.
Across the crowded table, bloodred cherries nestle in a footed white compote bowl at right. A robust lobster claw dominates at center left. And underneath the brimming display, a large black cat stares fixedly out as if ready to pounce.
Felines appear in some of Brown’s favorite early modern sources, surreptitiously feasting on the tabletop’s delicacies or watching from below as they lie in wait. Pesky, kittens!
See this and more in "Cecily Brown: Death and the Maid," on view through December 3. #MetCecilyBrown
