Today on International ASL Day, artist Janet Ahrens reflects on this Mesopotamian sculpture in The Met collection—and "the frozen tundra of the deaf world," in her words: ⁣

"Nature etches into the senses to develop the unheard sound of the unseen and unheard. The one smooth monochromatic side looks like early morning fresh fallen snow with the hidden features below. As time moves on, the slow erosion of snow caused by weather slowly shows the development of the heads features. ⁣

Nothing is perfect, just like individuals. The smooth and rough shows the easy and rough times of the individual life."⁣

As part of our #MetAccess program, every month we invite Disabled and Deaf artists to respond to works in The Met collection that spark curiosity or inspiration. ⁣📲 Follow the hashtag #MetAccess to read previous month's post.
