Hundreds of drill pipe sections are stored at a manufacturing plant in Baytown, Texas. These hollow pipes are primarily used on drilling rigs, where they are linked together and plunged several miles into the Earth’s crust to help extract oil. Drill pipe comes in a variety of sizes and strengths, but are generally 27 to 32 feet (8.2-9.7 meters) in length.
