A train passes through the Tehachapi Loop — a 3,779-foot-long (1.15 km) spiral of railroad running through the Tehachapi Mountains in southern California. Constructed between 1874-76, the track rises at a steady two-percent grade through the Tehachapi Pass, gaining 77 feet (23 m) in elevation over a 1,210-foot-diameter (370 m) circle. Any train longer than about 56 cars, like the one seen here, passes over itself when going around the loop.
