Sea ice surrounding Antarctica ebbs and flows with the season, growing in winter and receding in summer. In 2023, however, sea ice growth has been greatly suppressed, reaching a record low. At the end of June, 4.5 million square miles (11.7 million sq. km) of sea ice surrounded the continent — nearly one million square miles less than average.
