Photos by @dina_litovsky | As a photographer, my favorite assignments are those that are personal. In 2018 I flew to Kyiv, Ukraine, to photograph a unique tradition called the Last Bell for the magazine. The ceremony, which originated in the Soviet Union, marks the last day of classes for high school students before summer. They take over the city in an exuberant celebration, bathing in fountains and having picnics on the bank of the River Dnieper. I grew up in Ukraine, so I was aware of the tradition, but my family emigrated before I was of age to participate. Photographing it for National Geographic gave me a chance to experience it.
