These workers cannot turn to a government that actively threatens deportation, so instead they lean on faith institutions for support and a connection to their homelands. They are latest manifestation of the California dream. During the dust bowl, white farmers flocked westward, their tribulations etched in the novels of John Steinbeck. They were replaced by Mexican laborers, called braceros, and then by Indigenous workers from southern Mexico and their descendants. To see more of this work, please follow @brianlfrank.  1: A sky made yellow by wildfire smoke greets workers as they pick stone fruit in California’s Central Valley.   2: Workers, such as Doña Petra Ramirez, and others serve as a bridge for the U.S.-born to connect to the old ways and traditions of Mexico.  3 and 4: Pastor Tom Rios preaches in Spanish to workers at a barbecue hosted by Kingsburg Orchards. The evangelical Christian employer sees conversion as a primary obligation of its faith.  5: Some Indigenous spiritual practices have been incorporated into Catholic rituals. In the Calwa suburb of Fresno, dancers perform during a traditional Christmas procession based on a legend of a man who would “prefer to make a deal with the devil than with the colonizing Spanish.”  6: Mayordomo (supervisor) Porfilio Vargas manages a crew picking stone fruit in the Central Valley. Vargas believes that a primary principle of Christianity is the right of every person to have dignified work, including fair wages and safe working conditions.  7: Service at Nuevo Pacto, a Christian church constructed of mobile homes, is surrounded by fields where many of its parishioners work.
