But the high fashion version, a techno baroque water nymph who emerged from the sea in embroidered scuba suits, hand crafted helmets, and frilled gowns cut like ancient armor. That was the vibe at last night’s @ルイ・ヴィトン show on Isola Bella, a 17th century palace and exquisite garden in the Borromean Islands of Lago Maggiore in Northern Italy. It was all water, both from the lakes and, sadly for anyone who craved a garden tour, from the sky. When the rain didn’t let up, the show was hurried inside: How surreal to see @オプラ・ウィンフリー perched at a fashion show in the same room were Napoleon slept in the early 1800s and Mussolini hosted the Conference of Stresa in 1935. The enduring genius of @ニコラ・ジェスキエール is his ability to marry heritage with futurism, as easy to discuss rococo architecture as he is Stranger Things. For me, the highlight was the last seven looks, all pastel gowns blossoming in ethereal, aquatic ruffles and waves. The show’s backstage area was a series of rooms covered entirely in seashell mosaics. “It’s a fantasy, an archaeology of the future,” Ghesquière said. “The postmodern mermaid.” The night ended in non-traditional fairy tale too: Water-logged shoes on a dance floor and karaoke on a gondola ride home.
