This blue plaque was a birthday present lovingly made by my brother, Oscar. Allow me to explain the joke.

When I was a teenager, I worked a Saturday job as a shelf stacker at the Gateway supermarket in Wells, Somerset, (which was later renamed Somerfields. The same store features in ‘Hot Fuzz’.)

During my time working at Gateway, I had begun making amateur films. It all started in 1989 and continued throughout sixth form and art college. Initially I made films on a second hand Super 8 camera. Some of these movies gained attention when they were shown on various TV shows, most notably in 1991 on BBC kids show ‘Going Live’ and on Comic Relief Night. I actually won a Video 8 handy-cam in a competition with my winning Super 8 film. This lead to a whole number of other shorts and longer amateur films shot on video, some of which were shown on ITV's ‘Gimme 5’ and Channel 4’s ‘Takeover TV’.

So, between the ages of 17 and 20, I had been on TV a few times. This was also written about in my local paper, The Wells Journal. Despite this amateur film-maker ‘fame’, I continued working at the supermarket on most Saturdays and during most holidays. One of my fellow shelf stackers, Darren Curtain, used to needle me with a running joke, while I was stacking cereals or nappies, and ask, "Excuse me, are you the famous film director Edgar Wright? Can I get your autograph?" It was his way of humorously bringing me back down to earth, whether I was shelf stacking, collecting trolleys or, occasionally, cleaning up baby sick from the supermarket floor.

Cut to 13 years later, and I find myself on the set of ‘Hot Fuzz’ in Wells, Somerset. It's a night shoot, and we're filming the scene where Nicholas walks back to Danny’s house to watch movies. As we were setting up a shot around midnight, I hear a voice behind me saying, "Excuse me, are you the famous shelf stacker, Edgar Wright?" And, lo and behold, it was Darren Curtain delivering the most brilliant call-back of all time. I found it incredibly amusing then, and I'm thrilled to see it immortalised here on this plaque. Thank you Oscar and thanks, of course, to Darren. It’s the joke that keeps on giving.
