I had the privilege of working with Maria in 2006 on ‘Hot Fuzz’. She played the shotgun-wielding ‘farmer’s mum’, Mrs. Reaper, badass mother to Ken Cranham’s James Reaper. Maria was part of the (in)famous ‘granny kicking’ scene that, hands down, got the biggest and longest laughs of any film I’ve ever worked on. We shot the scene where Nicholas Angel takes out the two Reapers in Somerset in the early summer of 2006. However, when I got into the editing process, it became clear that we needed a couple of killer set-ups to make the scene really pop. I asked if this were possible before we test screened the film. Amazingly Eric Fellner and Nira Park trusted me and allowed me to do a small reshoot just outside London to punch up the sequence. Simon Pegg didn't return for the additional filming, as we had all his coverage already. During the reshoot, we covered a very necessary shot of Angel’s foot going directly into Mrs. Reaper's face. Maria kindly returned to shoot this close-up of a shoe-on-a-stick that we reversed, so we could pull it at speed from her face. This is an old Jackie Chan trick from the Hong Kong school of cinema. Even more incredible than being allowed to shoot some pickups before our first test screening, was the response to the scene. When it first played to a packed house, I’ve never heard such an enormous laugh for anything in my work. The next scene's dialogue was drowned out. I turned to Eric and Nira and gave them a thumbs up. The shoe in Maria's face was the magic ingredient that helped make the film a hit. Thank you and farewell to the great Maria Charles.
