This object was created in the workshops of Fortunato Pio Castellani, who opened his first shop in 1814, aged only twenty. Castellani became inspired by the ancient metalwork being unearthed at Italy’s archaeological excavations and realised there was a potential market for reproductions of these classical treasures 💍 Castellani experimented with techniques to recreate historical pieces as faithfully as possible. His greatest breakthrough was rediscovering the lost art of granulation, an Etruscan technique of applying tiny granules of gold to create decorative patterns, used in the ninth to fourth centuries BC. ✨The intricate dotted lines of Helios’ hair are an example of how Castellani managed to revive this technique.
