How many outfits do you wear in a day? 👗👕👚
This dazzling outer gown belonged to China’s Empress Dowager Cixi (1835–1908), who changed her costume about 10 times a day.
She owned hundreds of silk robes, always beautifully embroidered in fabulous colours 🧵
🦚 The swooping peacock and phoenix motif was inspired by designs from Meiji-period Japanese kimonos, while contact with Europe introduced aniline dyes and expanded the colours that could be worn.
These various influences make this robe a truly global object, which reflected the power and influence of China’s Qing Dynasty court.
Explore the innovation and influence of 19th-century China in our upcoming exhibition #ChinasHiddenCentury. Cixi’s robe will feature alongside art, newspapers, furniture – even soup ingredients – illuminating the lives of individuals who lived in late imperial China.
