This self-navigating artificial intelligence (AI) equipped robot, named "Mirai" ("future" in Japanese), disinfects commonly touched surfaces such as doorknobs, elevator panels, and handrails in the hallways using UV-C lights. It also quietly opens the door of each room to make sure residents are okay and then closes the door. When the robot detects an emergency such as a fall or residents’ sleep abnormalities based on their posture or movement, it notifies its human coworkers immediately by sending images.

The robot "Mirai" started working at Activa Biwa nursing home in November 2021. It mainly patrols the floor for residents with dementia several times throughout the night. The staff says, "by sharing the work with the robot, we can allocate the vacant human resources to the residents’ service."
