Video by @balazsgardi | Smoke seeps through the adobe walls of a home in Jang Joy Village, Wardak province, Afghanistan. We spent the previous night at the home of a Taliban fighter and woke up repeatedly gasping for air. Only later did we realize it was due to carbon monoxide passing through the wall from a cooking fire in the adjacent room.
To survey the impact of decades of war and daily life under the second coming of the Taliban, Jason Motlagh and I are driving along Afghanistan’s 1400-mile long National Highway 1, also known as the Ring Road.
