Video by @estherhorvath / This tow of the neuston catamaran is part of the research for the FRAM Pollution Observatory in the Fram Strait, led by Melanie Bergmann from the Alfred Wegener Institute. It collects small plastics and microplastic (plastic smaller than 5 mm) from the Arctic Ocean surface. The research team found the highest concentrations in Arctic sea ice (5,600 microplastic particles per liter) and deep-sea sediments (2,500 microplastic particles per liter) and lower levels at the dynamic sea surface and deeper water layers (0.2 and 0.1 microplastic particles per liter). This is important, as scientists found such particles in polar cod and in small zooplankton copepods that form the base of the Arctic food web. They also found surprisingly high concentrations in Arctic snow (1,800 microplastic particles per liter), indicating transport through the air. What's more, the amount of larger marine debris on the deep seafloor is on the rise: It increased from 813 to 5,970 items per square kilometer between 2004 and 2017. Please follow @estherhorvath and @awiexpedition for more polar research stories.
