Photo by @sarahyltonphoto / Frank and Charlene Mehling, 81, are ranchers in the area of Baker, Montana, one of the major cities the proposed Keystone XL pipeline was meant to cross. Along the planned 1,200-mile Keystone XL path, Montana had the longest pipeline route of any other state.

When President Joe Biden took office, he signed an executive order to shut down the controversial construction of the project in the United States. The pipeline was expected to transport 830,000 barrels of crude oil a day from Alberta’s tar sands to refineries on the Gulf of Mexico, crossing through the U.S. Midwest. Though the pipeline is dead, environmental concerns remain.
