The eyelash pit viper’s (Bothriechis schlegelii) beauty secret? Its “eyelashes” are actually a fringe of scales! The stealthy reptile tracks a wide variety of small animals, including frogs, lizards, bats, and rodents, using the heat-sensing pits between its nostrils and eyes. It’s venomous, too. Like most viper venom, its venom is a mix of nerve poisons, muscle-destroying poisons—myotoxins—and blood poisons, or hemotoxins, which activate clotting factors in the blood with astonishing speed.
