Some of the artists whose work is exhibited consider models of futurity in which lived reality is guided—if not dominated—by various technologies, whether on the level of art making or in terms of broader social changes affecting interpersonal relationships. This concept is exemplified by the works on view by Wade Guyton, Jeff Koons, and Trevor Paglen, who incorporate digital technologies into their processes as a way to override or interrogate conventions of artistic subjectivity and individual agency. Ed Ruscha takes a divergent approach, using anamorphic lettering to experiment with the communicability of language, blending text into abstraction. Nam June Paik situates six LCD monitors in place of various body parts in his enigmatic robot sculpture, which anticipates new directions for wearable or implantable technologies, while Woody De Othello explores the ways in which digital technologies have become extensions of human limbs, rendering their users’ physical forms impotent or otherwise disused. Likely inspired by the radical transformation of ideas about the future over this past year, Cui Jie imagines ghostly office spaces in which humans are eclipsed and only spectrally seen.
